A Thai Marriage Visa, officially: Non-Immigrant O Visa (Category "O" for Other) based on Marriage, is a long-term visa that allows a foreign national who is legally married to a Thai citizen to stay in Thailand for an extended period. This visa is typically valid for one year and can be renewed annually.

Who can apply?

The eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • you must be legally married to a Thai Citizen

  • meet financial requirements (฿400,000 min. savings)

  • apply initially for a transitory visa while your case is under review

  • provide proof of your relationship

  • and lastly, in some special cases, you may need to provide a police clearance / background check

  • Applicants must demonstrate financial stability by either:

    Bank Deposit: Maintaining a security deposit of 400,000 Thai Baht in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months prior to the visa application.

    Monthly Income: Providing evidence of a monthly income of at least 40,000 Thai Baht.

    These requirements ensure that the applicant can support themselves while residing in Thailand. 

  • What documents are required for the Thai Marriage Visa application?

    The essential documents include:

    • A passport valid for at least 18 months.

    • A completed visa application form.

    • Three passport-sized photographs taken within the last six months.

    • Evidence of the spouse’s Thai nationality, such as their Thai ID card and house registration book.

    • A marriage certificate (both the original and a certified copy).

    • A family photograph of the applicant with their Thai spouse and any children.

    • A map indicating the applicant’s residence in Thailand.

    • Financial evidence, such as a bank statement or income certificate, to meet the financial requirements.

    These documents establish the legitimacy of the marriage and the applicant’s financial capability.

  • Yes, holding a Thai Marriage Visa allows you to work in Thailand. However, you must obtain a valid work permit before commencing employment. The Marriage Visa provides a pathway to secure a work permit, enabling legal employment within the country.

  • Yes, as of January 23, 2025, Thailand legally recognizes same-sex marriages. This means that if you marry a Thai person of the same gender, your marriage is acknowledged under Thai law, and you are eligible to apply for a Thai Marriage Visa. This visa allows foreign spouses of Thai nationals to reside in Thailand and offers benefits such as the ability to work (with a valid work permit) and the possibility of indefinite renewals, provided all requirements are met.
